How To Make Reishi Mushrooms Tincture

Reishi mushroom is one of the most famous medicinal mushrooms globally, and it has been used for thousands of years in Asia.

It is considered the king of all mushrooms and is used mainly to,

-Boost immune system,

-Prevent cancer,

-Reduce inflammation,

-Improves sleep,

-Reduce blood pressure and cholesterol.

Reishi mushroom benefits are endless: it boosts your mood and helps you relax; it can fight infections like colds or flu; it strengthens your immune system, so you are less likely to get sick; it reduces stress and anxiety while improving sleep quality; it reduces blood pressure levels if they are too high; finally, this powerful anti-inflammatory herb helps with arthritis symptoms.

When I first heard about the reishi mushroom, I started researching everything about them. However, while there are hundreds of articles on reishi mushroom benefits and usage, only a few articles are about making a reishi tincture. Furthermore, since I do not have access to fresh Reishi mushrooms here in New York City, making a reishi tincture was the next best thing.

Reishi Mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic herb to improve longevity and vitality. As a result, they were listed as one of the World Health Organization's top ten herbs with excellent health benefits.

There are two ways you can make a reishi tincture: alcohol extraction or hot water extraction.

There are two ways you can make a Reishi tincture: alcohol extraction or hot water extraction. The first method gives you an alcohol-based liquid tincture that will last for years if stored in a cool, dry place, and the second method extracts the beta-glucans from the reishi mushrooms, which is excellent when you want to use it as a supplement and support your immune system by adding it to tea or coffee. Alcohol extraction uses Alcohol as a solvent, and it works very well to extract all of the medicinal properties from your herbs. However, it also takes quite some time for this process can take up to 3 months before creating your final product. What we will do in this tutorial is called a Duel Extraction. This is when an alcohol extraction and hot water extraction are combined.

  • Hot water extraction is used to extract beta-glucans from mushrooms. Beta-Glucans are a medicinal compound found in mushrooms that have countless healing properties. This process is done by boiling water at a simmer and having the mushrooms steep in it for 2 hours or more.
  • Alcohol extraction is done by using high-proof Alcohol like Everclear. I used Lvov Spirytus. Find a Mason Jar or an Ambered Glass Jar and fill the jar with Mushrooms. Next, fill the jar with Alcohol. If you use dehydrated mushrooms, leave some room at the top of the jar, they might expand when they soak up the Alcohol. This process will take 1-3 months.
  • The final step of the Duel Extraction is to mix the water and the Alcohol using a cheesecloth. This will bring the content of Alcohol down.

Both methods have their disadvantages. Alcohol extraction uses Alcohol as a solvent that may be too strong for some (kids). This is why mixing the hot water extraction with Alcohol is the best way to make a potent tincture!
